KKR Suffer Huge Blow as Matheesha Pathirana Ruled Out of IPL 2026Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered a massive blow in their IPL 2026 campaign, with Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The setback comes at a crucial stage of the competition as KKR continue their fight for a playoff spot. To fill the void left by the injured speedster, the franchise has signed Karnataka wicketkeeper-batter Luvnith Sisodia ahead of their final league-stage match against Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens.

KKR had invested heavily in Pathirana during the IPL 2026 auction, securing the Sri Lankan fast bowler for a whopping INR 18 crore. However, injuries prevented him from making a consistent impact throughout the season. Pathirana had earlier suffered a left calf injury during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 while representing Sri Lanka, forcing him to miss the opening phase of the IPL before eventually joining the KKR squad after receiving clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket.

Even after linking up with the team, Pathirana remained on the sidelines for several matches as part of his recovery process. He finally made his IPL 2026 debut for KKR against Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on May 16. The pacer started impressively, conceding only seven runs in his opening over and showing glimpses of his trademark pace and yorkers.

Matheesha Pathirana Suffers Season-Ending Injury Blow for KKR

However, disaster struck during his second over when Pathirana suddenly pulled up midway through his run-up after bowling two deliveries. He appeared to be in visible pain while clutching his left calf, forcing him to leave the field immediately. The injury has now officially ended his IPL 2026 campaign, leaving KKR without one of their marquee overseas signings at a decisive stage of the season.

KKR have brought in Luvnith Sisodia as a replacement for Pathirana. The youngster has previously been associated with both KKR and Royal Challengers Bengaluru and is regarded as a promising domestic talent. However, it remains uncertain whether he will directly walk into the playing XI for the must-win clash against Delhi Capitals.

Despite the setback, KKR are still mathematically alive in the playoff race. Currently placed sixth on the points table with 13 points, they must defeat Delhi Capitals convincingly and also rely on Rajasthan Royals losing to Mumbai Indians. Only then can KKR improve their net run rate sufficiently to overtake Punjab Kings and secure a place in the Eliminator. While the road ahead remains difficult, KKR will hope to finish the league stage strongly despite losing Pathirana at a crucial moment.
