Jos Buttler Steps Down as England’s White-Ball Captain After Champions Trophy ExitJos Buttler has officially resigned as England's white-ball captain. He announced his decision at a press conference on Friday after England's poor performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. England, except for Joe Root, who scored a century, lost by eight runs to Afghanistan, which knocked them out of the tournament early.

This was England's third consecutive ICC tournament failure under Buttler's leadership.

"I just want to make it clear that I am standing down as England's captain. It's the right call for me and the team. Hopefully, someone else can come in and work with Baz (Brendon McCullum) to get the team back to its best." Buttler told the press conference.

When asked what led to his surprise decision, Buttler explained, "I think it was quite clear that this tournament was very important, both in terms of results and my captaincy. Losing two games and getting knocked out, along with some leftover effects from previous tournaments, made me feel that my time as captain had come to an end. It’s a shame. I’m sad about it. But it just felt like it’s time for me and the team to have a change."

Since winning the 2022 T20 World Cup, Buttler has led England to early exits in the 2023 ODI World Cup, a heavy semi-final loss in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and now another group-stage elimination in the 2025 Champions Trophy. After England's eight-run loss to Afghanistan on Wednesday, Buttler said he wanted to reflect on whether he was "part of the problem" or "the solution" to England’s struggles before deciding on his future.

Butler has now finally made up his mind and has finally announced the decision of stepping down from the captaincy. There is still one more match left for England in the Champions Trophy, a game that is of no significance to them, which will be played against South Africa on Saturday. However, it may turn out to be important for South Africa as they may require a victory to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.
