Jasprit Bumrah Wins Prestigious ICC Cricketer of the Year 2024
Jasprit Bumrah has added another big milestone to his list after being named the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024. He was also honored as the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year and received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. Bumrah had an outstanding year in T20Is and Tests, playing a key role in India's T20 World Cup 2024 victory. He bagged 15 wickets for an average of 8.26 and at a very economical economy rate of 4.17, so, he is given the title Player of the Tournament.
Jasprit Bumrah was an important bowler for India in Tests, taking 71 wickets, which placed him well ahead of England's Gus Atkinson, who had taken 52 in 11 matches. Bumrah's bowling average stood at an outstanding 14.92, and his strike rate of 30.1 made him a good match-winner. With this accomplishment, he was only the fourth Indian bowler to achieve over 70 Test wickets in a single calendar year alongside legends such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev.
Bumrah started 2024 in style, playing a key role in India's win against South Africa in the Cape Town Test by taking eight wickets across two innings. He then dominated England at home, picking up 19 wickets in four Tests as India secured a 4-1 series victory. His career-best performance was at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, when he made a spectacular 32 wickets in five Tests, thereby becoming the Player of the Series award. During the series, Bumrah also made a he feat-full mark as he reached 200 Test wickets and became the 12th bowler from India to accomplish the feat.
Jasprit Bumrah is the fifth Indian cricketer to win the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year award. He joined the elite list after Rahul Dravid in 2004, Sachin Tendulkar in 2010, Ravichandran Ashwin in 2016, and Virat Kohli in 2017 and 2018. As the No.1 bowler in the ICC Test Rankings, Bumrah set a new milestone by becoming the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets, which he achieved at a bowling average of under 20-the best ever in history.
His supremacy was also reflected in the ICC Test Bowling Rankings, as he became the first bowler to cross the rare 900-point mark, and finished the year with 907 points—the highest ever by an Indian bowler.
