Jason Gillespie Appointed as Hyderabad Head Coach for PSL 2026 Season

After a brief spell coaching the Pakistan Test team, former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie will coach his former team again when he takes over from former Hyderabad coach Mushtaq Ahmed prior to the beginning of the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL) season on March 26. He is likely to return to Pakistan in time for the start of the PSL and he is expected to assume the role of Hyderabad's head coach for this season. Gillespie coach Pakistan during a brief period from April 2024 till December 2024. His appointment as Pakistan's head coach with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ended in December 2024.

Gillespie's previous comments regarding mismanagement and lack of clarity from the board have now come to fruition with the announcement that he will be named as the new head coach for Hyderabad. This was made public shortly before being confirmed by an official source. Also reported by Geo Super, Gillespie was the former red-ball coach for Pakistan and this role will be his first outside of being an assistant at a major league club in North America.

Coaching by Jason Gillespie has taken place in professional and nonprofessional cricket in addition to coaching in counties in England's domestic professional competition, various leagues around the world. Helping players develop through individual improvement is a strong suit of Jason Gillespie, as well as his ability to execute sound game strategy at all levels. Jason Gillespie's time with Pakistan included briefly serving as interim coach of the limited overs team after Gary Kirsten's departure; however, Jason Gillespie cited a significant amount of concern regarding the level of communication within the setup.

The Pakistan Super League will have an expanded format for its 11th Season and will now include eight different franchises to compete for the title. Also making their debut this season is the Hyderabad and Sialkot Franchises. The owner of the Hyderabad Franchise, Mr. Fawad Sarwar was successful in obtaining his Franchise by winning the Bid amount at 1.75 billion (PKR) ($6,247,500 USD). The PSL Player Auction will be held on February 11 as part of the PSL 11 auction workshop to have all players ready before the first game kickoff.
