IPL 2026 Security Tightens as BCCI Prohibits Smart Eyewear in Restricted Areas
Just days after IPL chairman Arun Dhumal dismissed concerns surrounding alleged ‘honey-trapping’ incidents and described IPL 2026 as a “very clean tournament,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced another layer of security measures. The board is continuing its efforts to safeguard the integrity of the league by tightening regulations around the use of wearable technology during matches.
The IPL’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has issued a fresh advisory to all franchises, warning players and support staff against carrying or using smart glasses, smart sunglasses, and smart goggles equipped with communication and recording features. The directive is aimed at preventing any potential misuse of technology within restricted tournament zones.
According to documents accessed by Cricbuzz and details reported by The Indian Express, the advisory was circulated to franchises on May 18. The move is part of the BCCI’s broader strategy to strengthen anti-corruption safeguards and enhance security protocols throughout the tournament.
The ACSU’s concerns stem from the growing popularity of smart eyewear products among professional athletes. Several technology companies have reportedly been marketing these devices directly to IPL players and team personnel, highlighting features that go far beyond those of traditional sunglasses.
Unlike ordinary eyewear, smart glasses can support live-streaming, text messaging, audio and video calls, voice assistance, and internet connectivity through Wi-Fi or mobile networks. These advanced capabilities have raised concerns within the BCCI about the possibility of unauthorized communication or data sharing during matches.
CSK’s Decline Raises Questions Over Fleming’s Future
As a result, the governing body has classified smart glasses under two categories within IPL regulations: “Audio/Video Recording Devices” and “Communication Devices.” This classification places them alongside other restricted electronic gadgets that are not permitted inside designated match-day areas.
Under the IPL’s Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) guidelines, the possession and use of such devices have now been completely banned within restricted zones. The rule applies to both players and members of the support staff, regardless of whether the devices are actively being used.
To ensure compliance, all personnel entering PMOA areas have been instructed to deposit smart glasses with designated Security Liaison Officers before entering. The devices must be surrendered in the same manner as mobile phones, smartwatches, and other restricted electronic equipment.
The BCCI believes that these preventive measures are necessary to eliminate any loopholes that could compromise the security and fairness of the competition. By restricting access to devices capable of recording or transmitting information, the board hopes to further strengthen the tournament’s anti-corruption framework.
Players and support staff have also been warned that violations of the new directive could lead to disciplinary action and penalties under IPL regulations. With the league entering a technologically advanced era, the BCCI appears determined to stay ahead of potential threats and maintain the highest standards of integrity throughout IPL 2026.
