IPL 2026: 3 Best Replacements for R Ashwin in Chennai Super Kings Squad

[ Poll: Ry008jy2 ]

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday, August 27. He shared the news through his social media account. Over the course of his IPL career, the legendary off-spinner played 221 matches and took 187 wickets.

There has been tension between Ashwin and CSK, and with his high price of INR 9.75 crore, the team was expected to release him to free up money for the auction. While CSK have other key areas to strengthen, they will also need another spinner to support Ravindra Jadeja and Noor Ahmad.

Right now, it’s hard to say who CSK might target since many big names could be released by other teams. For the moment, only the players who are currently without a team and may enter the IPL 2026 mini-auction are being looked at.

3 Players CSK Could Target as Ashwin’s Replacement in IPL 2026

Adil Rashid

The experienced leg-spinner has been out of the IPL for a few years. He played short stints with a few teams but never became a regular due to competition and team balance.

Even now, Rashid is bowling at a very high level. He knows subcontinent conditions well and recently had a strong T20I series against India. He can both take wickets and control the run rate, and his variations work even on pitches that don’t give much help. CSK have often trusted experienced players in the past, and among the veterans available, Rashid could be one of the best choices right now.\

Akeal Hosein

R Ashwin gave CSK a reliable defensive spin option. In his later IPL years, he wasn’t known for taking many wickets but was excellent at restricting runs with his variations and accuracy.
But in IPL 2025, his powerplay spells and control in the middle overs didn’t work as well against today’s ultra-aggressive batters. Still, defensive spin bowling is vital in T20s, and CSK will need such a bowler to complement Noor Ahmad, who is already their main attacking spinner.

Granted that CSK already have two established left-arm options, having another one in Akeal Hosein in a completely different role will aid the side, especially when it comes to bowling on batting-friendly conditions, and with dew.

Michael Bracewell

The New Zealand all-rounder looks like a good fit for the Yellow Army with his off-spin and batting in the lower middle order. He did well in a short stint with RCB a couple of seasons ago and has been a steady performer in both international and franchise cricket lately.

Bracewell is currently enjoying a solid campaign with the Southern Brave in The Hundred 2025, and is the 17th-ranked all-rounder in T201 cricket. Although spinners' influence at Chepauk has considerably declined, his smart bowling and X-Factor ability make him a potentially bargain acquisition for the next season. In his sole IPL season in 2023, he played five matches, where he picked up six wickets at an economy of 8.93, and scored 58 runs at a strike rate of 123.40.
