India's Champions Trophy Squad: Three-Way Race for Wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant in LeadThe Indian selectors and team management are getting ready to pick the team, and deciding on two wicketkeepers from several top players is sure to be one tough choice. While six other countries have already given their teams by the ICC's deadline of January 12, India and Pakistan still have not realsed who will be in their squads for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson realy great players, they've shown great enthusiasm and have the potential to win matches keep it simple for now, KL Rahul is the most important player when it comes to playing as the wicketkeeper batter in ODIs because he's been solid player.

Ishan Kishan might not get to play even though he scored a 200 runs in an ODI. Kishan was on the team for last year's ODI World Cup, but things have changed a lot. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he hasn't really performed well. Kishan scored 316 runs over seven matches and he only score one hundred against a team from the Northeast.

The selectors also have Dhruv Jurel to think about, since he's backing up Sanju Samson for the next T20I series with England. The meeting is about deciding how to balance experience, current performance, and future potential to finalize their picks.

Will the selectors support KL Rahul?

In 2023, KL Rahul really played well international cricket, playing as main wicketkeeper in ODIs since Rishabh Pant wasn't playing. During now, Rahul did an amazing job with 1,060 runs in 27 matches. Rahul scored two centuries and seven fifties and one of those major hundreds was in the World Cup. Before all this, in the Border Gavaskar Trophy earlier in the year, he was solid, scored in 276 runs across 10 innings. Rahul proved he could handle different roles, even opening the batting when the team needed him to.

Rahul had a tough time, the largest issue was his hamstring injury that injury made him to miss games for a couple of months last year. Despite not getting to play in the final ODI against Sri Lanka in August, where Rishabh Pant stepped in as the wicketkeeper, Rahul's performance throughout the year and even in the World Cup was solid.

Is Rishabh Pant Ready to Secure the Wicketkeeper Spot?

Despite KL Rahul having a more impressive tally, with 2,851 runs from 72 innings and an average of 49.15, a PTI report points out that, for the 2025 Champions Trophy, Rishabh Pant is being favored as India's primary wicketkeeper. This preference for Pant comes even though he has scored 871 runs at a batting average of 33.50 over his ODI career. Quite an interesting decision to opt for Pant hinges on the strategic benefit his left handed batting offers, playing in the team's middle order.

Before his abominable road accident, Pant was doing quite well in ODIs. In 2022, he scored 336 runs from 12 matches, and he scored his first one hundred runs in an ODI 125 off 113 balls when they played against England in Manchester. Pant has struggled to show he's the best in limited overs cricket, but he got to play in the last ODI against Sri Lanka. They picked him over Rahul who didn't do well in the series' first two games.

Samson, Kishan, or Jurel - who would choose?

In a match against South Africa on December 21, 2023, Sanju Samson hit an amazing century the last time he played an ODI for India. Today, he's in the team playing a five game T20I series against England. Specifically his excellent performance in ODIs, Samson has scored 510 runs in just 14 innings, with an amazing average of 56.66. Even though he's currently outperforming Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in T20Is, not playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy could tinker with his chances of always being picked for the team.

Ishan Kishan had an average performance in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring up 316 runs in seven games, and he even scored a big hundred against a team from the Northeast. However, his choice to not play in domestic cricket last season means he lost out on a BCCI yearly contract. Even though Ishan has scored 933 runs across 27 ODI matches, with an impressive average of more than 42 a record that boasts a score of two hundred runs in a single match and seven fifties the current team selectors aren't planning on him.

Jurel, a new player from Rajasthan Royals, caught the selectors' eyes because of how good he's playing. he debut up in a T20I game in Zimbabwe, he has been doing extremely well, and now they've picked him as backup for Sanju Samson in the T20I series against England. It's of major importance because it tells everyone they want him to remain for more T20 games, with Ajit Agarkar helping him out. Meanwhile, Kishan was part of the group for India's World Cup, but Jurel is the one getting a lot of attention now.
