IND vs ENG 1st Test Day 3 Highlights: India 90/2 at Stumps on Day 3, Rahul and Gill Rebuild After Early DamageKL Rahul held his ground as India moved quickly to 90/2 before rain brought an early end to Day 3 of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, on June 22. Rahul remained unbeaten at the close of play, scoring a steady 47 off 75 balls. He now has Shubman Gill at the other end as his new partner. Earlier in the innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for just 4 runs by Brydon Carse. After that, Rahul and debutant Sudharsan built a solid 66-run partnership for the second wicket, before Sudharsan was out for 30.

Earlier in the day, India managed to bowl out England for 465 runs, giving them a narrow first-innings lead of 6 runs. Jasprit Bumrah was the star with the ball, taking an impressive five wickets, while Prasidh Krishna supported well with three wickets. Ollie Pope, who had scored a century the previous day, was dismissed early on Day 3. Harry Brook then led England’s charge with a solid knock of 99, just one run short of his hundred.

Bumrah Bags Five as India Take Narrow First-Innings Lead

Rain briefly stopped play when India was leading by 96 runs. In a long afternoon session, England’s Harry Brook was unlucky to get out on 99, missing his century by just one run. Jasprit Bumrah later completed his well-earned five-wicket haul, helping India take a narrow six-run lead in the first innings. Before Bumrah wrapped up the innings by dismissing Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes added a handy 38 runs off 55 balls. He made the most of India’s slightly predictable pace attack to help England get close to India’s total of 471. During the afternoon session, England scored freely, adding 138 runs in just 23.4 overs while losing five wickets.

Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna took the wickets of Jamie Smith (40 off 52) and Harry Brook (99 off 112) with well-directed short balls. However, he was quite expensive, giving away 128 runs in 20 overs. Once again, bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur wasn’t used much, which raised questions about why he was picked in the playing XI. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler for India, claiming his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

India’s Fielding Woes Continue as Brook Gets Multiple Lives

India’s fielding continued to be a major concern throughout the match. Harry Brook has already been dropped twice, got another chance on 82 when Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped a catch off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling. Luckily for India, Brook couldn’t make the most of these chances and was eventually out for 99 in the 88th over. Even after taking the new ball at the 80-over mark, India’s bowlers couldn’t make good use of it.

Captain Shubman Gill’s decisions were also questioned. Some of his choices like bringing in Ravindra Jadeja late in the session and giving Bumrah only a short spell toward the end raised eyebrows. Earlier in the morning session, Harry Brook took full advantage of India’s inconsistent pace attack guiding England to 327/5 by lunch.

Indian Pacers Struggle Again Despite Bumrah’s Accuracy

England resumed their innings from 209 for 3 and with Harry Brook batting aggressively, they added 118 runs in just 28 overs. India did manage to take two key wickets overnight centurion Ollie Pope was out for 106 off 137 balls and captain Ben Stokes, who scored 20 off 52. Just like on Day 2, the Indian pacers struggled to match Jasprit Bumrah’s accuracy and impact. Earlier, near the end of Day 2, Harry Brook was dropped by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant on 46 just before lunch adding to India’s fielding troubles.

Ravindra Jadeja got sharp turn from the rough, but Rishabh Pant couldn’t hold on to a rising delivery. In the same over, Harry Brook reached his 12th Test fifty, adding to India’s fielding worries. The Indian team, led by Shubman Gill, also raised concerns about the worn-out Dukes ball, which the umpires agreed to change before the 75th over, just ahead of the new ball at 80 overs. Brook dominated the session with bold strokeplay, starting the day by hitting Prasidh Krishna for a four and a six. He even stepped out against Jasprit Bumrah, playing attacking shots over extra cover. Krishna later got the wicket of Ollie Pope, who edged a short, wide ball to the keeper for 106.
