ICC T20 World Cup 2026: Pakistan’s Semifinal Qualification Scenario After Sri Lanka Loss

by K D Mishra

The situation for Pakistan is very tough in Group 2 of the Super 8 round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. After England defeated Pakistan by two wickets in Pallekele, and England entered the semifinals. But problems came for Pakistan as Sri Lanka lost badly to New Zealand.

Pakistan’s Semifinal Qualification Scenario

Now, Pakistan have to win their last match against Sri Lanka. There is no other way left for them. Sri Lanka are already out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 tournament. New Zealand have three points, and Pakistan can get a maximum of three points as well. The match between Pakistan and New Zealand was washed out, and that helped New Zealand to get that extra point.

Pakistan also require England to win against New Zealand. If New Zealand win that match, Pakistan will be out the tournament. Even if Pakistan win against Sri Lanka and England win against New Zealand, it is not clear whether they will qualify or not. Both teams will then have three points, and Net Run Rate will come into play. Pakistan have -0.461, and New Zealand have +3.050, which is much better than Pakistan.

Pakistan will play their match against Sri Lanka after the England vs New Zealand match, so the target winning margin will be known. However, a large margin of victory will be required to make it to the semifinals.
