ICC Poster Sparks Speculation: Will Rohit Sharma Remain India’s ODI Captain Through the 2027 World Cup?The ICC poster аdvertising India's 2026 white-ball tour of England has generated discussion among Indian cricket supporters. The poster displayed Rohit Sharma alongside Harry Brook which led many to speculate about Rohit's future as India's ODI captain until the 2027 World Cup. Rohit Sharma has dedicated himself to ODIs exclusively since his retirement from T20Is after the 2024 World Cup victory and his Test cricket departure which makes fans think he will maintain his ODI captain role until the 2027 World Cup.

Even though there’s been talk about Rohit Sharma retiring from ODIs, he’s said he has no plans to quit and wants to keep leading India for now. But within the BCCI, there’s some doubt about his future as captain, especially with younger plаyers like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer looking like possible leaders. Plus, since Rohit isn’t captaining the Test or T20I teams anymore with Gill and Suryakumar Yadav taking over those roles, it adds to the feeling that a chаnge in leadership is coming.

The ICC has taken down the post for reasons that aren’t clear. Meanwhile, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, weighed in, saying it’s too soon to start making plans for the 2027 World Cup.

“We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament, which is going to happen in India in February-March. So, the entire focus at the moment after England will be on the T20 World Cup. And November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away. if you keep performing, age is just a number,” Gambhir said ahead of the England series.

The leadership scene in Indian cricket is changing. Shubman Gill has stepped in as Test cаptain, guiding India to a hard-fought 2-2 draw against England, bringing a calm, confident approach. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has taken over the T20I cаptaincy smoothly continuing what Rohit started. As for whether Rohit will keep leading India in ODIs through to 2027, that’s still up in the air, but the ICC’s poster and Gambhir’s comments have given fans a lot to think about.

"Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time," a source close to the BCCI told PTI.

"Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don’t think anybody is going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that," the source added.
