Gautam Gambhir’s Future Uncertain: BCCI to Review Head Coach’s Role and Rohit-Kohli’s Test Careers

Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, and Ajit Agarkar, chief selector, are to meet BCCI officials in Mumbai on Saturday, January 11, to discuss the outcome of the recently ended five-match Test series with Australia. According to PTI, the meеting will also consider the future of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

In the last two Test series against New Zealand at home and Australia away, India’s top run-scorers in the ICC World Test Championship, Kohli and Rohit struggled with form. Rohit made only 122 runs in his last six Tests, and as fеw as 31 runs in five innings against Australia. Kohli scorеd 283 runs in his last eight matches, including a century in the second innings of the first Test against Australia in Perth. However, his technique has come undеr the scanner as he has been dismissed frequently in similar situations.

In the meeting by the BCCI, it will be decided whether to begin with a transition phase from the coming Champions Trophy or just wait till the end of the ICC tournament cycle. Both Kohli and Rohit are likely to be given a chance to prove themselves in the ODI Champions Trophy, a format in which they have traditionally been very successful.

Their decision regarding their 50-over careers may also be influenced by their limited ODI appearances in 2024, just three matches each since the 2023 World Cup. Kohli’s low scores in Colombo against Sri Lanka (24, 14, and 20) are in contrast to Rohit’s relatively better performances (58, 64 and 35). Nevertheless, Kohli is still a good ODI performer; thus, a good run in the Champions Trophy could boost the confidence of both players.

Gambhir Under the Scanner

Whereas, the position is quite different for Tests. India’s next assignment is a challenging five-match away series against England and the selectors are likely to look askance at the lack of runs from Rohit and Kohli in the longest format. Gambhir’s input on their commitment to Test cricket will be a key part of the discussion. The BCCI may also consider Gambhir’s coaching staff performance during this period and how they have a plan to manage the transition phase smoothly.
