England Announce Playing XI for Second Test, Jordan Cox Set for DebutEngland have announced their playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, making four changes from the side that featured at Lord’s. Three of the changes have been forced due to player unavailability, while one is a tactical decision based on conditions. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson are unavailable amid ongoing investigations, while Ollie Robinson has been ruled out with a knee injury. Spinner Shoaib Bashir has been left out as England opt for a pace-heavy attack.

One of the biggest talking points is the inclusion of Jordan Cox, who is set to make his Test debut. Cox has replaced Stokes in the lineup after impressing in domestic cricket, most notably with a recent double century for Essex against Leicestershire in the County Championship. The wicketkeeper-batter was originally in line to make his Test debut in 2024 before a thumb injury derailed those plans.

Jordan Cox Earns Test Recall After Double Century

England head coach Brendon McCullum explained the decision, saying: "He scored a double-hundred, which is a pretty compelling case. We think that his power and his rounded game are quite a nice fit at No. 7." McCullum added that Cox has been on England's radar for a long time and possesses the all-round skillset required to succeed in Test cricket.

James Rew was initially selected as the reserve batter but was viewed primarily as cover for the top six positions. Since Stokes usually bats at No. 7, England felt Cox was a better fit for the role. However, Rew could still make his Test debut if wicketkeeper Jamie Smith becomes unavailable after recently welcoming his second child. England are expected to make a final decision on Smith closer to the start of the match.

The bowling attack has also undergone significant changes. Ollie Robinson has been ruled out after experiencing knee discomfort during training in Hove on June 12. His replacement is 23-year-old Sonny Baker, who will make his Test debut despite having played only 12 County Championship matches for Hampshire. England's management has been closely monitoring Baker's progress since 2024 and views him as a bowler with immense potential.

Speaking about Baker, McCullum said: "He's got good airspeed, he swings the ball, and he's got great skills. But he charges in, and he's got wild celebrations. I'm excited to see how he goes." Meanwhile, Shoaib Bashir has been dropped after not bowling a single over in the first Test, with conditions at The Oval favouring seamers. Matt Fisher replaces him and returns to England's Test setup for the first time in four years.

England will also welcome back Jofra Archer, who was rested for the Lord's Test as part of workload management. His return strengthens the pace attack alongside Josh Tongue, Matt Fisher, and debutant Sonny Baker.

England's Playing XI for the second Test is: Emilio Gay, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root (captain), Harry Brook (vice-captain), Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper)*, Jordan Cox, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Matt Fisher and Sonny Baker.
