by K D Mishra

Cricketer Mohammed Shami, along with his younger brother Mohammed Kaif, has been summoned by the Election Commission of India (ECI). These fast bowlers, hailing from Bengal, have been issued a summons as a part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which began on December 16, 2025.

ECI Delays Hearing as Mohammed Shami Plays Vijay Hazare Trophy for Bengal

ECI has detected a few discrepancies in the forms for the enumeration of Shami and Kaif. According to India Today, there have been some irregularities in the progeny mapping and self-mapping in the forms of Shami and Kaif. The ECI has issued a notice to the brothers to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) on January 5.

However, owing to their commitments in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26, Shami and Kaif won’t be able to make an appearance in the hearing at SIR. Shami had already sent a note to ECI regarding his commitments. Following this, the hearing has been postponed from January 9 to 11, after the group stage games of Bengal and before the start of the quarterfinal on the 12th of January.

Shami wrote in his letter to ECI,

“I am writing in reference to the notice received concerning my appearance before your office on 05 January 2026 in respect of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral Roll. I would like to respectfully inform you that due to my involvement in presently playing cricket matches at the domestic level, in which I am officially playing for the Bengal State Team, I would be unavailable for the scheduled hearing on the specified date and time,”

Both Shami and Kaif are enrolled as voters at Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Ward Number 93, which comes under the Rashbehari Assembly Constituency. Both brothers hail from a place called Amroha in the state of Uttar Pradesh but are permanent residents of Kolkata. They both represent Bengal in domestic cricket.
