ECB Ultimatum Puts Brendon McCullum’s England Test Coach Role at Risk
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is ready to give men’s head coach Brendon McCullum a final call about his future as Test coach. A report says the board wants McCullum to make big changes to the team’s culture and environment. His response will decide if he stays as England’s Test coach for the next season.

McCullum, captain Ben Stokes, and cricket director Rob Key are all facing pressure after England’s tough Ashes tour in Australia. England lost the Ashes in just 11 days, the fastest defeat in history, after losing the first three Tests. They did bounce back with a strong win in Melbourne their first Test win in Australia in more than 10 years but they are now close to ending the series 4–1 down.

he said that,
“There is no doubt in my mind that Brendon and I are the right people to carry on doing this for the near future. I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have worked with Brendon. I cannot see there being someone else who I could take this team with from where we are now to even bigger heights," Stokes was quoted as saying before the Sydney Test. “So for us as captain and coach, when we do have the time off, we need to put our heads together and go, What is it that we think we need to do to go to the next level?’"
The report also says that out of the three, Stokes’ position is the safest. He has always supported McCullum and his views in the team’s review meeting could play a key role in the coach’s future. The ECB wants the team to bring in more discipline and professionalism.
They also plan to add more specialist coaches in support roles, which is very different from McCullum’s relaxed, single-coach style. Another concern for the board is that McCullum is also England’s white-ball coach. But for now, he is expected to stay in that role for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
