CT 2025 Points Table: Australia entered the semi-finals after a washout against Afghanistan in Lahore.

by UMMADI JAYA

Rain once again interrupted the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, causing the Group B match between Afghanistan and Australia in Lahore to be called off on Friday.

Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat first. Sediqullah Atal hit 85 off 95 balls, while Azmatullah Omarzai scored 67 off 63 runs and played a fine cameo in the middle-order to steer Afghanistan to a competitive 273.

For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis took three wickets for 47 runs, including two in the last over, while Spencer Johnson took two wickets for 49 runs and leg-spinner Adam Zampa took two wickets for 48 runs.

In the second innings, Afghanistan had early chances to dismiss both Australian openers, Travis Head and Matt Short, but couldn't hold on to them. Omarzai finally got Short out, but by then, Head and Steve Smith had settled in and built a strong partnership, taking Australia to 109/1. Just when things were looking good for Australia, rain interrupted play, and the match had to be called off.

Australia has made it to the semifinals with four points from three games after their match was called off due to rain. Both teams were given one point each. On the other hand, Afghanistan still has a small chance of reaching the semifinals, but the washout against Australia has made things much harder for them.

Afghanistan and South Africa both have three points at the moment. But if South Africa wins their match against England in Karachi on Saturday, they will move up to five points.

If South Africa beats England, it will finish as the top team in Group B and move to the semifinals. Even if South Africa loses, it will likely stay ahead of Afghanistan because of its much better Net Run Rate. For Afghanistan to qualify, England must defeat South Africa by at least 207 runs, which is a very difficult task.

England got knocked out of the tournament after losing its first two matches.

India and New Zealand have made it to the semifinals from Group A. They will play against each other on Sunday in Dubai to decide who finishes first in the group.
