CSK WPL Entry Looks Likely as Chennai Super Kings CEO Makes Big Statement Ahead of IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are ready to join the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after staying out since the league began. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has said that the team plans to enter women’s cricket, and the WPL is their main goal.

CSK’s WPL entry could help expand women’s cricket in India

Women’s cricket has become very popular in India. After the WPL started and India won the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025, more people began to watch women’s matches. Earlier, most fans only followed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Now, players like Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana are also big stars. Since 2023, the WPL has grown a lot. It now gets more viewers in India than big football leagues like the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League.

Kasi Viswanathan said that women’s cricket is the first area where CSK wants to grow. He said this at the Invest in Tamil Nadu event. He also said that CSK will not join right now, but it will happen later.

“Not now, but in the coming years, CSK will grow. Our first focus will be women’s cricket,” Viswanathan said to RevSportz. CSK already has teams in the IPL, SA20, and Major League Cricket through Texas Super Kings. They already know how to manage teams in different leagues. Joining the WPL will be the next step.

CSK did not join the first WPL auction in 2023 because they wanted to wait and see how the league goes. They wanted to be sure it would do well before spending money. At the same time, CSK were busy starting Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 league. So they focused on that first.

Now that the WPL is doing well, CSK feel ready to join. The BCCI has also said that more teams may be added to the WPL in the future. Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal said during the WPL 2026 auction that one or two new teams could be added, and later the league may use a home-and-away format. This makes CSK’s entry into the WPL very likely soon.
