CSK CEO Opens Up on MS Dhoni Retirement Amid IPL 2026 AbsenceThe Chennai Super Kings had a difficult start to their IPL 2026 campaign, suffering multiple defeats in the early stages of the tournament. However, the five-time champions slowly found their rhythm and bounced back strongly with a string of consecutive victories. Despite the improvement in performances, one major void remained throughout the season — the absence of legendary captain MS Dhoni.

For the first time in franchise history, CSK played an entire IPL season without Dhoni featuring even in a single match. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter was ruled out due to persistent injury concerns, including calf and finger issues, which prevented him from recovering in time for the tournament. Fans continued to hope for a comeback as fitness updates surfaced during the season, but Dhoni never returned to the field.

Dhoni’s absence was deeply felt both on and off the field. His leadership, calmness under pressure, and ability to guide younger players have always been crucial for Chennai Super Kings. While the team managed to recover after a poor start, many supporters believed the side lacked the finishing touch and tactical sharpness usually associated with Dhoni’s presence.

Speaking about Dhoni’s future, the CSK management maintained that the legendary cricketer would be given complete freedom to decide his next step. Head coach Stephen Fleming and other support staff repeatedly stated that the franchise would never pressure Dhoni into either continuing or retiring. “The decision will always be MS Dhoni’s. We respect whatever he chooses,” Fleming had earlier said.

The pressure also increased on current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who endured a mixed season as leader. Although Gaikwad showed promise at times, CSK struggled for consistency under his captaincy. This led to growing speculation among fans about whether Dhoni should return to lead the side once again if he regains fitness for IPL 2027.

During an exclusive interaction with RevSportz, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan opened up about Dhoni’s future but avoided making any definitive statements. He echoed Stephen Fleming’s views and insisted that all decisions regarding Dhoni’s playing career rest solely with the former India captain himself. According to Kasi, the franchise has not yet held any formal discussions with Dhoni about retirement or a possible return.

“See, we have not discussed anything with MS as of now. As you know, MS makes his decision on his own, and we respect that. We would always like to have him as a permanent fixture of CSK in whatever capacity, be it as a player, be it as a coach or a mentor, whatever he desires. Every decision depends on him,” Kasi Viswanathan said.

The CSK CEO also hinted that Dhoni could continue with the franchise in a different role in the future. Even if he decides not to play again, the management would be eager to have him involved as a mentor, coach, or advisor. His influence on the franchise remains unmatched, and the team sees him as an integral part of CSK’s identity.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, Chennai Super Kings became one of the most successful teams in IPL history. He led the side in 244 matches, winning 145 games while losing only 96, giving him a remarkable win-loss ratio of 1.51. During his tenure, CSK lifted five IPL titles and built a reputation for consistency, composure, and dominance.

In comparison, Ruturaj Gaikwad has captained CSK in 33 matches so far, winning only 14, with a win-loss ratio of 0.736. While the young skipper is still learning, Dhoni’s legacy continues to loom large over the franchise. Whether he returns as a player or transitions into a mentor’s role, one thing remains certain — MS Dhoni will always remain the heart and soul of Chennai Super Kings.
