Chinnaswamy Stadium Set for Massive Redevelopment After IPL 2026 Final SnubJust days after losing the hosting rights for the IPL 2026 final, the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is set to undergo a major redevelopment. Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president Venkatesh Prasad admitted that the stadium’s limited seating capacity may have been one of the reasons behind the BCCI’s decision to move the IPL summit clash to Ahmedabad.

Speaking at an event in Bengaluru, Prasad revealed that plans for the stadium’s redevelopment had already been initiated even before the BCCI reassigned the IPL 2026 final. “One of the reasons that the finals was moved out from this venue probably is the capacity of the stadium. Obviously this process had started before that,” Prasad stated, hinting that infrastructure limitations played a key role in the decision.

Global Architects Show Interest in Chinnaswamy Redevelopment Project

The KSCA has reportedly received an overwhelming response after issuing a global expression of interest for the redevelopment project. According to Prasad, nearly 28 architectural firms from around the world expressed interest in redesigning the stadium, showcasing the scale and ambition of the upcoming makeover.

KSCA has now shortlisted around eight firms for the next phase of the process. These firms will be further narrowed down to three or four finalists, who will then present detailed conceptual designs for the revamped stadium. The redevelopment is expected to focus on increasing capacity, improving fan experience, and modernizing facilities to meet global standards.

Originally, Bengaluru had been scheduled to host the IPL 2026 final on May 31. However, the BCCI later shifted the marquee clash to Narendra Modi Stadium. The move disappointed fans in Bengaluru, especially after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title-winning campaign had raised expectations of hosting a historic final at Chinnaswamy.

Officially, the IPL management stated that the relocation happened due to “certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols.” While the exact reasons remain unclear, the upcoming redevelopment project signals KSCA’s determination to transform Chinnaswamy Stadium into a venue capable of hosting major global cricket events in the future.
