Can Pakistan Win the T20 World Cup 2026? Strengths, Weaknesses and Key Players Analyzed

[ Poll: QLj29JLR ]

The ICC T20 World Cup is just around the corner. Pakistan is again considered a dark horse as they try to win their 2nd IST World Cup. The Men in Green had a somewhat roller-coaster ride in 2025-winning multiple T20I series and their losses being that of the Asia Cup to India. The Team has a good young/experienced mix of players and were fired up after 2 successive victories against Australia in T20I games . Therefore, we are going to look at the strengths and weaknesses of Pakistan as they compete for another World Cup , within a very competitive group.

Strengths of Pakistan

Pakistan will play all their matches in Sri Lanka, where the conditions will help spin bowlers. This suits Pakistan well as they have many good spinners. Abrar Ahmed is one of the best spinners right now, and along with him, Usman Tariq adds variety as a mystery bowler. Apart from the duo, the team also has Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Saim Ayub as the three other spin-bowling options in the team. Pakistan certainly has one of the best batting depths in the tournament, as Shadab Khan generally bats at 6, Mohammad Nawaz at 7, Faheem Ashraf at 8, and even Shaheen Afridi can bat at 9.

On paper, having a good batting depth doesn’t seem like a big deal, but in a tournament like a T20 World Cup, if the Pakistan top order crumbles, there will be assurance that the team bats deep.

Weaknesses of Pakistan

Pakistan’s main concern going into the T20 World Cup is the scoring speed of their top and middle order batters. Players like Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, and Salman Agha have performed well at times, but the big question is whether they can play aggressively enough if Pakistan has to chase a target above 200 runs. For the same reason, the middle-order also looks weak. Last year, Babar Azam had a T20I strike rate of less than 120, and Fakhar Zaman also languished in the mid 120s as their batters lack the power game to take down the opposition attack. In Shaheen Afridi, Salman Mirza, and Naseem Shah, Pakistan has a decent pace attack, but they are not threatening the opposition batters.

Shaheen is coming back after a knee injury, and Naseem has been in and out of the side. Salman Mirza is a promising bowler, but he lacks the big match experience at the highest level, and that could come back to haunt Pakistan.
