BCCI Plans Split Captaincy: Kohli for Tests, Hardik for ODIs Post-Rohit Era
After Rohit Sharma stepped down as captain, Indian cricket is set for a major shift in leadership across formats. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning to introduce different captains for Test, ODI, and T20 formats.
“India is going to have three captains for three formats very soon. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the captains fare,” the source said.
Hardik Pandya to Lead ODIs, Surya Kumar Yadav for T20s
According to BCCI sources, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is expected to take charge of India’s ODI team. Surya Kumar Yadav has been chosen as the captain for T20 internationals, despite earlier discussions favoring Hardik for the T20I.
Sources said that the selection committee, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, had chosen Surya over Hardik for the T20I role. If Surya fails to perform in T20s similar to his struggles in ODIs there could be a rethink, with Hardik potentially emerging as the leader across white-ball formats.
Gambhir Backs Kohli for Test Captaincy
India’s newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has reportedly said that idea of Virat Kohli returning as Test captain. The discussion between Kohli and Gambhir is said to have taken place in Australia during India’s tour. It's still uncertain if Kohli has agreed to return as Test captain. The board could also sync with Gambhir and the ball is now in the selectors’ court to join the dotted lines. Kohli, with his experience and strong leadership in Test cricket, is the perfect choice to be captain again.
