BCCI on Alert Ahead of Ireland Tour Amid Growing Security Concerns in Belfast
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring the security situation in Belfast, Ireland, ahead of Team India’s upcoming T20I series. Concerns have emerged after a knife attack on a local resident reportedly triggered anti-immigration violence in parts of the city. While Cricket Ireland has already addressed the matter publicly, the unrest has prompted Indian cricket authorities to remain vigilant as preparations for the tour continue.
According to reports, India are scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland on June 26 and June 28 before travelling to England for a white-ball tour comprising five T20Is and three ODIs in July. However, a report in Dainik Jagran claims that the BCCI is prepared to consider alternative arrangements if the security situation does not improve in the coming days.
A BCCI source reportedly indicated that player and staff safety remains the board’s top priority. The source added that the Indian board is in regular contact with Irish authorities and Cricket Ireland regarding developments on the ground. If normalcy is not restored in time, the venue for the matches could be shifted, although the final decision would rest with Cricket Ireland.
Cricket Ireland also released a statement confirming that it is monitoring the situation closely. “Cricket Ireland is continuing to monitor the situation in areas currently experiencing community unrest and will make a decision within the next 48 hours regarding this Sunday’s Irish Senior Cup and National Cup fixtures,” the governing body stated. The organization emphasized that it is working alongside security agencies and local authorities.
The statement further added, “We remain in close consultation with the relevant authorities and our provincial unions. The safety and security of players, coaches, match officials, and supporters is paramount in our deliberations. Further updates will be provided as they become available.” These remarks underline the seriousness with which Cricket Ireland is treating the ongoing situation.

Despite the off-field concerns, the upcoming series holds significant importance for several Indian players. It will mark Shreyas Iyer’s first assignment as India’s full-time T20I captain after recently being entrusted with the leadership role.
