Bangladesh Cricket Suffers Setback as Shaun Tait Steps Down
In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, Shaun Tait has stepped down as the national team's bowling coach after just over a year in the role. The former Australian speedster joined Bangladesh’s coaching staff in May 2025 and had initially expressed his desire to remain with the team until November 2027. However, his stint has come to an early end, bringing an unexpected conclusion to what was planned as a long-term coaching assignment.
Tait Wanted to Be Part of Bangladesh’s 2027 World Cup Journey
When Tait first accepted the role, he made it clear that he wanted to be part of Bangladesh’s journey toward the 2027 ODI World Cup. His vision was to help develop the country’s fast-bowling resources and build a competitive pace attack capable of performing on the biggest stage. His resignation means those plans will now remain incomplete.
Reports regarding Tait’s possible departure had been circulating for some time before the official confirmation arrived. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, the former pacer revealed that family commitments played a major role in his decision to step away from the position and return home.
Reflecting on his tenure, Tait expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the players he worked with during his time in charge. He described the experience as rewarding and highlighted the strong relationships he had built within the Bangladesh dressing room and the wider cricketing community.
Despite stepping down from the full-time role, Tait indicated that he could still return to Bangladesh in the future. With tournaments such as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) offering coaching opportunities, he left the door open for short-term assignments if suitable opportunities arise down the line.
Tait explained that the demands of year-round international cricket across formats made it difficult to balance professional and personal responsibilities. After completing 12 months in the role, he felt it was the right time to prioritize his young family and spend more time at home.
International Coaching Roles Before Bangladesh
Before joining Bangladesh, Tait had already built an impressive coaching résumé across franchise cricket. He previously served as head coach of the Chittagong Kings in the BPL and also worked as a bowling coach in several major T20 leagues, including the Big Bash League (BBL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), and Lanka Premier League (LPL).
His coaching experience was not limited to franchise cricket. Tait had also worked with international teams before taking up the Bangladesh assignment, having held coaching roles with both the West Indies and Pakistan national sides. These experiences helped establish him as one of the more respected fast-bowling coaches in the game.
As a player, Tait was renowned for his raw pace and aggressive bowling style. During his international career with Australia, he consistently troubled batters with speeds exceeding 150 km/h, making him one of the fastest bowlers of his generation.
In One-Day Internationals, Tait claimed 62 wickets in 35 matches at an impressive average of 23.56 while maintaining an economy rate of 5.19. His ability to strike regularly and bowl at high pace made him a valuable asset for Australia in limited-overs cricket.
The right-arm pacer also enjoyed success in T20 Internationals, where he picked up 28 wickets in 21 appearances while conceding fewer than 7.5 runs per over. Unfortunately, recurring injuries curtailed his playing career, preventing him from achieving even greater heights despite his immense talent.
Tait also featured in the Indian Premier League during his playing days. He represented the Rajasthan Royals between 2010 and 2013 and later joined the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2016. Although he did not play a match for KKR, his IPL journey further enhanced his reputation in franchise cricket before he transitioned into coaching.
