Andrew Flintoff Steps Down as Northern Superchargers Head Coach Over Pay Dispute
Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of the Hundred team, Northern Superchargers, after a pay disagreement with the new owners, who also run Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. Flintoff is widely remembered as one of England’s most popular cricket stars and an Ashes hero. In recent years, he has taken on coaching roles including with the England team and the Northern Superchargers.
Before Flintoff’s appointment as coach in 2024, the Northern Superchargers at Headingley in Leeds had trouble achieving good results, but under his guidance, they finished fourth in 2024 and reached the eliminator this year. Flintoff said he wanted to stay on as head coach, but he couldn’t continue if his pay was much lower than the other head coaches in the tournament.
“Unfortunately, I’m not going to do it, which is sad. Over the past two years, I felt we were building something really good, and I would have loved to see it through. We have new owners now. I spoke to them, they called and said they wanted us to continue, so I said, ‘Okay, make us an offer,’” the 47-year-old said on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, co-hosted by Superchargers and England spinner Adil Rashid.
“I genuinely don’t do it for the money, although it’s nice, but I’m worth more than just over a quarter of the [salary of] other head coaches,” he said. “I wasn’t encouraged they wanted me anyway, but then also you want to feel valued. So, I said that it’s not going to work for me, and they weren’t going to move on it.” he added.
Sun Group Acquires Full Ownership of Franchise
The Sun Group now owns 100% of the franchise after buying the 51% stake that Yorkshire held, in addition to the 49% they already got through the auction. The owners, who also run Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, said they had offered Flintoff a pay raise.
“We had discussions with Freddie and made him an offer, which was higher than his current salary at Northern Superchargers. While we would have loved to have him with us, we respect his decision,” a spokesperson said.
While someone like Daniel Vettori could be considered for the role, he is currently coaching another Hundred team, the Birmingham Phoenix. Flintoff has said he has received several offers but hasn’t made any decision yet. With teams like Manchester Originals and Trent Rockets looking for a new head coach soon, Flintoff could be a strong option.
