Allegations against a former captain land Ahmed Shehzad in hot water
Former Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad has been summoned for questioning as part of an inquiry initiated following his allegations against a former national team captain. Shehzad, who appears as an analyst on a local television show, made a series of comments about the said captain, who deemed them harmful to his reputation.
What are the allegations?
The comments were made during several of his media appearances and included accusations regarding selection decisions in the national team, especially the exclusion of a certain player.
As a result, the former captain pursued legal action against Shehzad. According to sources, Shehzad will be questioned under Pakistan’s cybercrime law, and if his responses are not satisfactory, a First Information Report (FIR) can be filed against him.
Legal response and implications
The complainant argued that Shehzad’s comments surpassed criticising on-field performance and transitioned into allegations, which could shape public perception about him.
“Repetition of unsubstantiated claims can shape public perception even if they are not true,” a source close to the complainant said about the comments.
Ahmed Shehzad has represented Pakistan in 153 international games, including 13 Test matches, 81 ODIs, and 59 T20Is. He last played for the side in 2019, when he played two T20Is in Lahore and was dropped from the side following his dwindling form.
