IPL 2025 Points Table: Team Rankings After RCB vs LSG Match
Rishabh Pant’s first century for Lucknow Super Giants wasn’t enough, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru chased down the target to win by six wickets at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Despite Pant’s brilliant knock, LSG couldn’t stop RCB’s strong performance. With this win, RCB sealed their place in the top two of the points table. They will now take on Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1, which is set to be played on May 29 (Thursday) at the Mullanpur Stadium in Chandigarh.
While chasing a huge target of 228 runs, Royal Challengers Bengaluru got off to a steady start. But LSG got their first breakthrough in the sixth over when Akash Maharaj dismissed Phil Salt. That gave the home side a bit of hope. LSG seemed to pull things back even more in the eighth over when William O'Rourke struck twice, removing both Rajat Patidar and Liam Livingstone. For a moment, it looked like the game was swinging back in Lucknow’s favour.
Virat Kohli (54 off 30) kept things steady during the chase, anchoring RCB’s innings well. But in the 12th over, Avesh Khan got the breakthrough. Kohli stepped out to go over the top but couldn’t time it properly his bat twisted in his hand, and the shot didn’t carry as planned. Ayush Badoni, stationed at long-off, took a comfortable catch to send Kohli back.
After his dismissal, Jitesh Sharma and Mayank Agarwal took charge. The duo stitched together a brilliant 107-run partnership, guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to victory in just 18.4 overs. Earlier in the evening, after being asked to bat first, Rishabh Pant smashed an unbeaten 118 off 61 balls, and Mitchell Marsh added 67 off 37. Their 152-run stand for the second wicket helped LSG post a massive 228, taking full advantage of a good pitch and some loose bowling by RCB.
Pant Silences Critics with First IPL Century Since 2018
All season long, Rishabh Pant had struggled to find rhythm with the bat, managing a strike rate of just 107. His dip in form played a big role in Lucknow Super Giants’ inconsistent run. But that changed in a big way during this match. Pant looked in complete control, striking the ball cleanly and confidently, with his strike rate soaring around 200. Once he stopped trying to overhit and focused on timing, everything seemed to click. He kickstarted his innings by taking on Yash Dayal in the fourth over, smashing him for 18 runs in a row with a 6, 4, and another 4. From there, Pant never looked back, and his confidence lifted the entire batting effort.
Mitchell Marsh, who was at the other end, fed off that energy. Though he began cautiously scoring just 19 from his first 16 balls he suddenly shifted gears. Nicknamed ‘Bison’ for a reason, Marsh unleashed his power, beginning with a strong pulled six off Romario Shepherd. From there, he matched Pant stroke for stroke, and together, the pair built a massive 152-run partnership that laid the foundation for LSG’s huge total.
Rishabh Pant reached his second fifty of the season off 29 balls with two crisp boundaries off Suyash Sharma, while Mitchell Marsh continued his strong form, bringing up his own fifty in 31 balls with a six off the same bowler, crossing 600 runs in what has been his best IPL season in a decade. Marsh, however, fell soon after, edging Bhuvneshwar Kumar to stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma behind the stumps. That didn’t slow Pant down he powered on and brought up his first century of the season, and only his second IPL ton in seven years, off 54 balls with a classy four over cover. He celebrated the landmark with a big smile and a signature somersault, capping off a stunning knock.
