Asia Cup 2027 Schedule Update: Bangladesh to Host ODI Tournament from June 18

The 2027 Asia Cup has received a major update, with Bangladesh set to retain the hosting rights despite recent speculation that the tournament could be shifted elsewhere. The continental event is scheduled to be played in the ODI format, serving as crucial preparation for the ICC Men's ODI World Cup later in the year. India enter the tournament as the defending champions, having defeated Sri Lanka in the 2023 final, while they also hold the T20 Asia Cup title.

There had been uncertainty over the scheduling of the tournament because 2027 is also an ODI World Cup year. However, Pakistan journalist Saleem Khaliq has reported that the Asia Cup is expected to be held from June 18 to July 4, 2027. Although the dates have not yet been officially confirmed by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) or the participating cricket boards, the proposed window would provide teams with an ideal opportunity to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Like the previous edition, the tournament is expected to feature six teams. Bangladesh was awarded the hosting rights under the ACC's rotational policy after Sri Lanka hosted the 2023 edition. In recent months, however, reports suggested that Bangladesh could lose the hosting rights because of strained cricketing ties with India, raising doubts over whether the event would remain in the country.

Bangladesh Set to Retain Asia Cup Hosting Rights Despite Earlier Concerns

The tensions reportedly escalated following disagreements between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). India also postponed its scheduled white-ball tour of Bangladesh in 2026 amid the diplomatic situation between the two nations. Despite those concerns, the latest reports indicate that Bangladesh will continue as the official host, with efforts underway to restore normal cricketing relations between the two boards.

According to the report, the newly appointed BCB administration under Aminul Haque has made improving ties with the BCCI one of its priorities. As a result, India are expected to travel to Bangladesh for the tournament if the current plans remain unchanged. The move is seen as a positive step toward strengthening bilateral cricket relations and ensuring the smooth conduct of the continental championship.

Another significant development concerns the leadership of the Asian Cricket Council. As per the rotational system, current ACC President Mohsin Naqvi's tenure will conclude in April 2027, after which the Bangladesh Cricket Board will oversee the election of the next ACC president. This transition is expected to take place before the Asia Cup, while Sri Lanka and India are next in line to host future ACC tournaments under the existing rotation policy.
