Ajit Agarkar Likely to Get Extension, Continue as Chief Selector for Another Year: REPORT
Indian cricket is going through a natural change. Ravichandran Ashwin has retired from international cricket. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from T20Is and Test matches. Ravindra Jadeja has also stepped away from T20 cricket. Now, Shubman Gill has become the new Test captain.
Right now, when the Indian cricket team is going through a period of change, it’s important to have steady leadership in management and decision-making. With that in mind, the BCCI has decided to extend Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar’s contract for at least one more year. “Agarkar should continue as chief selector. He will most likely get an extension, but the board will follow the proper process to make it official,” a BCCI source told CricBlogger.
Since becoming chief selector in July 2023, Ajit Agarkar has done a great job. His background as a former cricketer, coach with Delhi Capital, and selector for Mumbai has helped him succeed. Under his leadership, Team India won the T20 World Cup 20 24 and the ICC Champions Trophy 20 25. They also reached the final of the ODI World Cup 20 23.
Clarity and Consistency: Agarkar’s Impact on Team Selection
Ajit Agarkar has brought much-needed clarity to team selections, often rewarding players who have performed well. With veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from international cricket, the BCCI feels it’s important to have consistency in the selection panel and wants Agarkar to stay on for at least another year. While there have been reports of some disagreements with the team management and even criticism linking him to Rohit and Kohli’s Test exits his overall approach has been fair. Notably, he backed Sarfaraz Khan, a consistent performer in domestic cricket, giving him a chance in the Test squad when the team was struggling.
Nitish Kumar Reddy made his Test debut and impressed by scoring a century in Australia, while Karun Nair earned a recall after eight years. Yashasvi Jaiswal also got his Test debut soon after Ajit Agarkar became chief selector. Agarkar and his team have shown good judgment in bringing in new talent at the right time. With the T20 World Cup 20 26 on the horizon, the BCCI will be hoping this smart approach to selection continues.
